I Plead Not Guilty

I recently read two books. One was loosely developed around the sins of the father theme, and the idea that you can’t outrun your genetic make-up and/or your upbringing. This led to some rather spirited discussions in book club as to whether or not the main character was destined to make bad choices and ultimately end up in jail, like his dad. The other one had no seeming connection to first what-so-ever. It was a book on intuitive eating. The second book posed the question, “When were you told that your body cannot be trusted?” (Tribole, Evelyn)
I can remember the exact moment, I was told. I was a little girl at my before school physical, when my 400 year old, white haired, cranky doctor told my mother I needed a diet and told me there was no gain without pain. I grew up in the Swanson frozen dinner, bologna, fluffernutter era. My mom was constantly trying every new diet and Jane Fonda workout. We were both victims of the diet culture emerging out of the innovation of substandard fast food.
I joined IIN (Institute of Integrative Nutrition) with a very modest goal. I wanted to do better by my family. I fell in love with the idea of bio-individuality as I studied every dietary concept out there. I too firmly believe that one size does not fit all, and what may have worked for someone else, may not work for me or for you. I had no idea the education was also a preparation toward becoming a certified holistic health coach, but to me that meant I would be able to share this incredible journey with you.
Okay, does genetics and upbringing play a part - absolutely. Are they a life sentence - absolutely not. Can you learn to trust your body again? Can you transform your mind, body, and spirit? You most certainly can channel your inner dragonfly and soar!
